Hilarious Improv Podcasts

One thing many people love about radio is the hilarity of the hosts. Whether they are joking about their everyday occurrences or have pre-written an elaborate gag, comedy is refreshing when you are on the drive to or from work. What makes podcasts so great is that you can really focus on one element and find a whole show dedicated to doing that particular thing well. Improv comedy is something that podcasts are great for, not only do these professional funny people know how to make you laugh but they are so inventive they can cook up new scenarios and characters week after week without things getting tired. If you love the comedy of radio but want to skip the ads and music check some of these shows out.

Spontaneanation

Hosted by the ever-funny Paul F Tompkins, this improv show has an air of class that others do not. This may be because Paul is the archetype of gentleman, or because the show is wonderfully scored on piano by the amazingly talented Eban Schletter, giving the conversations and hilarious plays a jazz lounge feel. Each week guests from comedy, film and TV show up to take part in sketches that begin at a location randomly picked by the previous week’s guest, this allows for something strange and unplanned every time.

Now showing on the Earwolf network is this laugh out loud mock-up of an after-school meeting. With a supergroup of comedians Drew Tarver, Dan Lippert, Jon Mackey and Ryan Rosenberg combine their skills to portray some of the worst teachers you could possibly hope to meet. As they unleash stories about what occurred each week at school, they quickly show just how self-centred, psychotic and hopeless each of their fictional characters are. If this wasn’t already cause for you to burst into giggles, each week they are joined by a guest who often plays a fellow teacher (sometimes an angry parent or famous musician) to really add more madness to the comedy coffee already brewing.

Alchemy This

With a host like Hollywood star Kevin Pollack (known for A Few Good Men and The Usual Suspects) you are already off to a great start with this improv show that sees rotating guests every week. Pollack, himself known for his humour and impeccable impressions, cooks up the scenes for unsuspecting actors and chimes in himself throughout. Here we are guided to a real mixture of places such as the crime scene in a detective noir, to the offices of Facebook amidst the modern political climate.

The Andy Daily Podcast Pilot Project

The Andy Daily Podcast Pilot Project

The premise of this show is that Andy and Matt Gourley have had to sit through a bunch of pilot podcast episodes in hope of finding a new series, each week we get to listen to episode one of a new show with a new host. In reality the highly talented impersonator Andy Daily is hosting each wildly different podcast as a shockingly different character each time. With every host more ridiculous than the last here you’ll be cracking up to cowboy poets and clueless monster hunters in no time.
